QuakeJS is a port of ioquake3 (which is the open-source version of Quake 3 Arena) that can be played in a browser window without installing any software on your machine.

I recently finished a small project to take the open-source QuakeJS code and figure out how to host it locally for use on a LAN (without requiring an internet connection to the outside world). The original project lets you host your own server but the use-case is to connect using the "master server list page" and download content from the "master content server" that you don't control. In order to run it locally I had to recreate the connection page and content server. There was some additional work to be done to make the server boot up cleanly.

I wrote a step-by-step guide on how to configure your own QuakeJS server. I thought some of you might appreciate setting up something like this yourselves. Minor changes would allow the server to be accessible from the web (it should basically just be port forwards). Hopefully soon I'll have a chance to test out making the server internet accessible (instead of just on the local LAN) but someone with enough Linux skill to follow my guide should be able to figure out how to make it externally visible anyhow!

If you'd like to check it out the guide is here: https://steamforge.net/wiki/index.php/How_to_setup_a_local_QuakeJS_server_under_Debian_9

The original code I worked from is here: https://github.com/inolen/quakejs

My forked repo with the extra features is here: https://github.com/begleysm/quakejs

The main QuakeJS site (where you can connect to a server and play on existing servers) is here: http://www.quakejs.com/

Happy Fragging!
